Who We Serve

All children! We bring expert teachers to schools and youth organizations (onsite or remote).

Partnership

We work diligently and thoughtfully with our partners to create a custom program to fit their needs and schedules.

Philosophy

Our program is a progressive, child-centered sequential learning program that draws inspiration from the philosophy of Orff Schulwerk and the science of Gordon Music Learning Theory. Opportunities abound for students to explore, compose, improvise, create and perform. All of our classes meet or exceed the California Arts Standards for Music and Dance.

Why The Arts?

Beyond the music and dance skills students will take with them, their increased social-emotional well being is key. The positive impact of quality music education is well-researched and well-documented – it’s baffling why it’s not taught in every school!

School-Wide Benefits

We also offer customized training for school administrators and staff to learn how to bring music into the culture of the classroom to help create ritual, successful transitions, community and support for students and teachers.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

As an organization, we are in a constant state of learning and reflection. We acknowledge the generational systemic injustices in the arts and take active steps to create more equitable arts education programs.

Music & Movement

Our Music and Movement Classes, typically 20 – 45 minutes per week, focus on the sequential development of musical skills.

Musical Genres: Jazz, Classical, Folk from around the world, West African, Brazilian, Mexican, Mariachi, Peruvian, American, Cuban, Caribbean and more. We will introduce students to as many genres as possible to expose their bodies and minds to new sounds, beats, rhythms, languages, and modes of expression.

Instruments (varies by grade level): Drums, recorders, ukuleles, rhythm sticks, shakers, bells, scarves

Growth Framework:

We go the extra mile…

Composition: All children in our programs are involved in writing their own music, movement, stories, rhythms. This makes a connection with music in a way that cannot be done from only listening to an adult giving directions.

History and Representation: History brings context to the music children are learning. Tracing back styles or genres of music often leads to powerful origination stories. In our classes you will hear teachers asking questions like “Who does your favorite artist or band listen to? And who inspired them?”. These simple questions evoke deeper discussions around issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Dance

Our Dance Classes, typically 20 – 45 minutes per week, focus on the sequential development of movement skills.

Styles of Dance: HipHop, Jazz, Ballet, Latin Dance, Musical Theater, World Dance, Folk Dance

We go the extra mile…

History and Representation: Why do ballet dancers stand with heels together and toes pointed out? What is HipHop? These are the historical and cultural contexts we discuss in class. It piques interest and deepens childrens’ understanding and appreciation for the art form.

Anatomy: In our classes children learn about their anatomy and how and why their bodies move in different ways. You will hear our teachers talking about how the shoulder ball and socket is different from the elbows. We challenge children to learn about their bodies: can you touch your elbow with the same hand? Why not? Education in functional anatomy leads to body acceptance, empowerment, and respect for one’s own unique body and capabilities.

Our Teachers

Our teachers are knowledgeable, passionate, talented, and go the extra mile to engage with every single student. Our teachers hold degrees, and oftentimes advanced degrees, in arts education.

We take the safety of our students and community seriously. In addition to going through a rigorous interview process, we also perform/require:

  • Background checks
  • Live Scan fingerprinting
  • Adherence to the CDC’s Covid-19 mandates and recommendations
  • Extensive shadowing and training with the Executive Director
  • Partner assessments, which includes reviewing feedback from classroom teachers, administrators, and families

Financial Commitment

Since arts equity is our primary goal, we focus on removing the cost barrier that prevents students from accessing an arts education.

For schools that have arts funding we offer sliding scale pricing to stay within their budget.

For schools in underprivileged communities with little or no funding, we use gifts from our generous donors to deliver the same high-quality arts education program.

Thanks to our donors, volunteers, educators, parents and communities who believe in the power of the arts, we are able to serve all students. Reach out to us and we will find a way to bring the joy of music and dance into your community.
